DISSECTING A GAMBLER’S MIND – Lessons learned for our daily life

For the first time, I played slot machine at casino. I was lucky to bag in RM200 without any money in. Don’t ask me how I did with zero money. I’m not going to be responsible if you get addicted to gambling

Then, a friend of mine kindled my interest with roulette. He mentioned about a strategy which could increase the probability of winning. I started to google on roulette to find out more. Then, I came across a blog, “How I lost RM 35,000 in Genting

He lost RM 35,000. That’s a lot of money. It’s interesting to see what went through his mind. Here's the summary of how much he lost:

He went into the casino with RM 6,400. He bet RM 2,300 on Roulette, and won RM 1,700.  Then, he continued to bet again and lost all the gain and his initial money.

He wasn’t satisfied and believed that he could win back, so he used his credit card to withdraw RM 5,000. He lost them all again after winning some money.

Then, he withdrew RM 21,000 from Maybank ATM. He bet RM 10,000 in a go, twice. Which he lost both bet.

Finally, with his last RM 1,000, he bet on a single number on roulette and lost.
That’s a total loss of RM 33,000.

I wonder how did he sum his lost to RM 35,000.

Throughout his blog you can see him blaming on everything for his lose. He’s also being ignorant on why he lost. There’s a lot of hopes and desperation going on. A lot of regrets with a lot “If only…

Here are some his comments on why he lost.
Note: Edited to remove vulgarity.

“I should have left Genting after winning RM 1,700…. Now, if I had left at that time, I would have gotten a bit of pocket money minus the trip costs.

Regrets starts to creep in. But, is it because he choose stay overnight or because he choose to make a second bet, which caused him to lose the money. If you noticed, he was blaming on staying overnight, which actually doesn’t make sense.

“Unfortunately I made a second bet (also 2k) and lost, before switching tables and lost all of my initial RM 6,400 buy in. This forced me to go to the International Room to withdraw RM 5,000 from my credit card.

No one forced him. But, he made the situation sounds like he is being forced to do so. As if he have no choice. This is a very dangerous mind-set. Beware of this pattern in your daily life. There are always more than one choice

“Now, if that is not bad enough, I went out, and was about to check into the hotel when I sa w Maybank. My ethanol impaired decision made me withdraw RM 21,000 from my savings account.

Is it really the bottle of Absolut Flavor of the Tropics he took which caused him to withdraw those money? Maybe yes, maybe not. Alcohol can affect our thinking process. So, another lesson, don’t drink (too much) before you want to take a huge decision. Again, this could be just him trying to blame everything else.

“However, two bad decisions (going against the dragon instead of chasing it) with a RM 4,000 bet each time made me lose RM 12,000 (inclusive of credit card charges)

There is a huge fallacy here. Dragon refers to consecutives winning of either Red or Black, Odd or Even, Big or Small. In his case, the roulette was winning continuous RED, but he bet against it and went Black twice, which he lost both time. He’s blaming himself for going against the dragon and should have followed the dragon.

The thing is there is no way you can tell what the next number or colour going to be. The chances of what it’s going to be next is almost 50-50. You still have chances to lose even if you bet both RED and BLACK, why? The number ‘0’ is GREEN. I just hope people could see through this clearly.

This really tickled me,
“The RED DRAGON which I attempted to break was stronger than I thought it was.

He himself created a reality or illusion, that the RED DRAGON as thou it's a real thing and was strong. Whether we like it or not, we all do have such illusions which we created around our usual life. We tend to imagine things which are not there just to justify certain losses or mistakes.

“My friend saw this table with a Black dragon on Roulette in my last ditch attempt to do a comeback. If I had gone to that table, this post would have been very different – it would have the title “COMEBACK KING!!! Won RM 7,000 after a huge loss. Hail to the King baby”

This is yet another illusion created by him to make him feel slightly better, that he is still capable of winning. It’s just a matter of choosing which table.

If you read his entire blog, I can read his gambling pattern. He always goes against the DRAGON no matter what. So, instead of betting on BLACK, he might have bet RED as he always tend to go against the dragon.
Disclaimer: I’m not asking him to follow the dragon. If he read the above statement, and decides to bet by following the dragon and lose his money, I won’t be responsible for his action.

“There goes my condo…and my trips…and even my F&B.

Now he regret of gambling as he could have used his money for something better.

“Oh well, it’s all my own fault and I shall take all the blame.

Well, at least he realized something. Yet, making such statements is easy. How many times have you seen people says that it's their fault and keep on doing the same thing over and over again.

To truly realize his mistakes and forgive himself is another level. I hope he realizes it and forgive himself.

Everything and anything can be turned into gambling. It’s not necessary you must go to casino to feel that adrenaline rush.

Every day, in our life, we do tend to take action by thinking that we are being forced to do so. We always blame, in denial, do things in desperation, and regret of our actions. We create illusion upon illusion of why our life is sucks. That includes myself.

What is important, is not to continue with that path. We as humans always makes mistakes. It’s part of our life. We need to acknowledge them and learn to let it go.

Learn to forgive them. It won't be easy. Never give up.

How to forgive yourself?

This is a powerful sentence, “I CHOOSE TO FORGIVE MYSELF”. Repeat this as many times throughout the day until you truly feel free. Alternatively, you can pray to God and ask Him to forgive you

By the way, I have a free room at Genting. Anyone wanna follow me? :p
